Immigration, integration policies and deviance – 6 ECTS

Vassilis Karydis

Course description

This module will examine the concept of deviance and delinquency in relation to the notion and the content of formal and informal social control and its mechanisms. It will also examine the consequences of these forms of social control, particularly in regard to immigration and the types of adaptation of migrant communities in host countries, giving emphasis to the experience of Greece as a country of "new immigration". During teaching are identified and analyzed the mechanisms and the processes that lead to the construction of social stereotypes, the primary and secondary deviation, the criminalization and the victimization of social groups. Key element of the module is the comparative examination of the international experience, particularly as derived from European countries of "old immigration" and focusing on policies and models of immigrants’ integration, especially those of second (or third) generation.
